Finding Confidence Again: Real Stories of Mental Health, Support, and Coming Out the Other Side

Smiling man wearing a backpack enjoys a peaceful hike along a sunlit forest trail.

Incontinence is a physical condition, but for many people, the emotional side is what feels heaviest. Embarrassment, anxiety, and the instinct to hide what's happening are all common, particularly when leaks start interfering with work, school, relationships, or plans someone used to say yes to without thinking.

Here's what the stories below make clear: that weight doesn't have to be permanent. Each of these NorthShore Hero Club Members found their way toward something better: through support, self-compassion, and protection that finally worked. Their experiences are different, but the direction is the same.

How Support From a Partner Turned Depression Into Advocacy

For John M., losing bladder control at 35 was emotionally devastating.

"I went into a serious depression. My wife was amazingly supportive and got me through it."

That support changed the trajectory. With his wife alongside him, John learned to navigate daily life without living in fear of others discovering what he called his "secret". And eventually, he stopped treating it as a secret at all.

"Thanks to my wife, I am now an advocate for ending the stigma associated with wearing diapers. I openly discuss it with others on a regular basis. I had shirts made which say 'Back in Diapers' and they start a lot of conversations and help others realize they are not alone."

John's story is a reminder of what becomes possible on the other side of the hardest part. The openness that once felt impossible became the thing that helps other people feel less alone.

How Finding Products That Actually Work Reduces Anxiety and Isolation

Charlie C. spent his teen and early adult years cycling through incontinence brands that consistently fell short.

"Throughout my journey I tried numerous brands, hoping to find a solution. Unfortunately, many well-known options fell short, with issues like low absorbency, odors, and worst of all, leaks. These frustrations limited my social life and contributed to feelings of depression and anxiety."

The turning point came when Charlie found products built for what he was actually managing.

"I quickly found that NorthShore offered a variety of styles to meet my diverse needs. The MegaMax® worked perfectly for overnight use and long trips, while the MegaMax® AirLock™ was ideal for my job, school, and doctor appointments. For exercise and social events with friends, the GoSupreme® line provided the perfect balance of comfort and protection. I finally found a brand that I could trust."

The products themselves aren't the whole story. What changed for Charlie is what those products made possible: a social life that wasn't organized around avoiding leaks, and the mental space that comes with trusting protection to hold.

Why Self-Compassion Matters When Managing Incontinence Long-Term

Taylor N. has managed incontinence since she was young. When medication that had once helped stopped working, the emotional weight compounded.

"When I had accidents, I felt so embarrassed and incredibly alone. I do so much laundry when diapers leak or I run out, and every time it happens it feels like yet another reminder that I am different. I struggle with anxiety and depression, and when my mental health is low, something as simple as doing laundry can feel impossible. Incontinence has made my mental health worse at times — it pushes me into isolation, makes me avoid plans, and makes me feel like I'm constantly behind."

What Taylor arrived at, though, is something worth sitting with — and it's the note her story ends on.

"I wish someone had told me about NorthShore when I was younger so I didn't spend so much time doing laundry or panicking about leaks. I also wish someone had reminded me to be gentler with myself. For anyone struggling, I want you to know I truly understand. It isn't easy, it can be embarrassing, but our bodies are our homes. We get to treat them with kindness, patience, and love."

The reframe of treating your body as a home rather than a problem to manage  is one of the most meaningful shifts a person can make.

What Helps Most When Incontinence Affects Emotional Wellbeing

John, Charlie, and Taylor came to incontinence through different paths and at different stages of life. What connects their stories isn't the hardest part. It's what came after.

Support from a partner. Products that finally worked. Self-compassion learned slowly and hard-won. Each of them found a way through — and each of them chose to share their experience so the next person feels a little less alone in theirs.

Incontinence is far more common than the silence around it suggests. Talking about it, whether with a partner, a friend, a healthcare provider, or a community of people who understand, tends to make the weight lighter almost immediately.

The NorthShore Hero Club is a community of customers and caregivers who have chosen to share their experiences openly so the next person feels less alone. Read stories and, when ready, share your own.
