700 Miles of Confidence: Thru-Hiking the Arizona Trail with Bedwetting

Hiker with a backpack descends a rocky cliffside trail overlooking the vast red-orange canyons of the Grand Canyon.

Kevin shares his story

For most of my life, bedwetting felt like a limitation. Something that quietly dictated what I could and couldn't do, especially outdoors. Backpacking trips were something I enjoyed, but due to bedwetting I only felt comfortable going for only a night or two. A thru-hike didn't feel realistic. Until I decided to try anyway.

A few years ago I had dreamed of thru-hiking the Arizona Trail, a 700+ mile trail spanning from the border of Mexico through Arizona to the border of Utah. I was out to prove that not only am I capable of taking on such a strenuous commitment, but that I can do it in spite of bedwetting.

Now, nearly 700 miles into the Arizona Trail, I've proven to myself that this doesn't have to hold you back.

Having a reliable system changed everything. For me that meant using quality products like NorthShore MegaMax® diapers for overnight protection, Supreme Quilted Wipes for quick and easy cleanup, DiscreetShield™ Disposal Bags, and an OPsak Odor-Proof Bag for secure, discreet disposal. Knowing I had gear I could trust allowed me to focus on hiking instead of worrying.

The biggest challenge wasn't logistics, it was fear. Waking up wet often started my day with panic: Did I ruin my gear? Is this the end of my hike? But over time, I learned to trust my system. I would clean up, pack out, and keep moving.

One of the hardest parts was being around other hikers. I worried about being judged. About being noticed. I even avoided camping near people at times. No one said anything and that silence helped me realize that most of the fear was internal.

If you're living with bedwetting or incontinence and wondering if something like this is possible, guess what? It is, especially with the right products, a reliable routine, and patience with yourself.

The outdoors should be accessible to everyone, including people managing conditions that aren't always visible. Sharing this is about more than my hike. It's about showing what's possible with the right attitude and quality products like the ones from NorthShore.
