Identity, Not Shame: How NorthShore Helped One Man With Cerebral Palsy Reclaim His Confidence

Two people walk together through a spacious indoor building, smiling as they talk. One person carries a white laptop and backpack, while the other uses a white cane and wears a backpack, highlighting an accessible and supportive environment.

David tells his story

Living with Cerebral Palsy since birth, I've always tried to be independent and manage difficulties on my own.

My incontinence journey really began in 2006 when I was attending college. I was having accidents in my clothes, and I was so embarrassed that I would end up throwing soiled clothes in the trash and have to spend money to buy new clothes.

It wasn't until a close friend of mine, who could see that I was having difficulties, recommended that I try incontinence products.

Naturally, I was at first apprehensive because I didn't want to feel like I was regressing back to that of a young child and needing to wear diapers and other supportive products.

My friend took it upon herself to order some NorthShore products and have them shipped to my apartment, and even offered to help me apply them properly.

After many tears and final submission, I had my first peaceful night of no accidents or soiled clothing.

I continue to deal with incontinence to this day, and I'm always looking for quality products that help manage the uncomfortable parts of incontinence.

I finally discovered that not even my own family is truly concerned about my incontinence. They know that it is a part of my life and is not going away. Even my seven-year-old niece, who I thought would make a big deal about seeing my incontinence products, sort of brushed it off like it's no big deal.

NorthShore and staff have truly given me my identity back. I don't have to live in shame anymore. I can have the confidence to go about my life, and not let incontinence define me or what my life will become today, tomorrow, or in the future!
