One Husband's Story of Caregiving Through Alzheimer's With NorthShore by His Side
LDG shares their story…
When you hear the word Alzheimer's, your heart stops a beat, and you take a deep breath before you move forward and ask any questions. That was our experience with my wife and me in the neurologist's office, and we sat in momentary silence. No, it wasn't an unexpected diagnosis since both her parents had passed on because of the side effects of Alzheimer's. But that was only the beginning of what has been a twenty-year journey.
Twenty years, but for the last five, she has been confined to her hospital bed and dependent on others for help with every need that comes with being alive. And, for the past three years she has been non-communicative, so we watch for facial expressions to address her physical and medical needs.
Over all these years NorthShore diapers, diaper liners, bed liners, sanitary wipes, and other incontinence necessities have been lifesavers. Changes are constant. Six or eight times a day and sometimes more, because of another abnormality — colon cancer. But we know who we can depend on — NorthShore. In another room in the house, we have a storage area with shelving that contains nothing but the necessities required for her upkeep, bodily welfare, and comfort, and they all come from NorthShore.
Yes, I could visit the local market, just around the corner, and purchase most of these items as they are readily available on the open market, but that would require purchasing many more of those products because they just do not stand up to the needs she requires; too small, not sufficiently manufactured with the absorbent material necessary to carry the waste away from her body and not strong enough to hold it until the next change.
On one or two occasions I have submitted suggestions to the management at NorthShore that I feel would make their product better, and I have noticed some changes for the better. Now, I am sure those changes were not made just from my suggestions, but probably from the suggestions of other users as well. However, it lets me know NorthShore cares and listens to its customers.
Thank you, NorthShore.
