Air Force Veteran with Neurogenic Bladder Regains Active Lifestyle Thanks to Premium Adult Diapers

Key Takeaways:

  • Combat Search and Rescue veteran regained independence and confidence after developing neurogenic bladder from military-related bladder cancer treatment.

  • Premium incontinence products, like NorthShore MegaMax adult diapers, enabled him to return to an active lifestyle including motorcycle riding, rock climbing, and theme park visits without fear of leaks.

Caleb Shares His Story

In December of last year, my doctor found multiple cancerous and precancerous tumors in and around my bladder due to chemical exposures during my past 12 years of military service. The removal of these caused me to develop a neurogenic bladder.

This made me spiral into depression, going from being an independent and outgoing Combat Search and Rescue servicemember who was extremely active in the community to a shell of myself, afraid to go out after my first leak. Having to frequently change in public was nerve-racking and embarrassing enough, but the constant fear of that tell-tale dark spot made me unwilling to go anywhere.

Finally, after a few months of looking, researching, and trial and error, my wife found NorthShore® and ordered me samples of everything. I’m not exaggerating when I say I think they saved my life. Being able to go the entire day out or the entire night in without worrying about changing or leaking gave me my confidence back.

I can go on motorcycle rides, road trips, rock climbing, or spend an entire week at Universal in Orlando without fear of issues.

If someone is going through the depression and pain caused by newfound incontinence, or has been struggling with it for years, here are three things I’ve learned:

  1. People pay a lot less attention than you'd think.

  2. The extra absorbency is worth the added bulk; it's always better to have more than you need than less.

  3. When in doubt, MegaMax it out. Out for drinks at the bar for hours, movie marathons, there is nothing you will reasonably throw at them that will ever cause a leak. I've tested it myself.

You aren't alone in this.

How Veterans Can Receive NorthShore Products Through the VA Pharmacy

Veterans who qualify for incontinence supplies through the VA may be able to receive NorthShore products with the right documentation and approval. If NorthShore products are considered medically appropriate, here are the steps to follow.

Step 1: Ask a Physician for a Letter of Medical Necessity

Request that a VA physician provide a Letter of Medical Necessity that:

  • Specifies the exact NorthShore products required

  • States that substitutes are not appropriate, if applicable

Clear documentation helps the VA Pharmacy understand why a specific product may better support health, comfort, and quality of life.

Step 2: Provide the Letter and Product Information to the VA Pharmacy

Share the Letter of Medical Necessity along with the following details:

If the VA Pharmacy has questions, NorthShore can be reached at:

Step 3: Understand the Approval Process

Because NorthShore products may be considered non-formulary, a VA pharmacist must approve the order. In some cases, a physician may need to submit an appeal if the request is initially denied.
