How to Select Incontinence Products for a Plus Sized Woman [INFOGRAPHIC]
Step 1: Evaluating your needs is very important when shopping for any incontinence products. Lifestyle and mobility limitations make a big difference in how these products will work for you, so take the time to think about what you're looking for and your lifestyle. Tab-style adult diapers need to be fastened so this style is typically helpful for people who are bedridden or have a caregiver. Pull-on style underwear resembles regular underwear that you just have to walk into the leg holes and pull up to use. Determine what style are most comfortable wearing.
Step 2: If you don't have a tape measure you can still get an estimated size of yourself. Use yarn, string or ribbon to wrap around the widest part of the hip and thigh for sizing. Ask a friend or family member if they can help if needed. You can compare the length of the string or yarn that you use with a ruler and add up the inches.
If you do not want to use protective underwear and you feel like your output can be contained with a liner (large-shaped pad) then make sure you get the right length and width of the pad. If the pad is too long or too wide this may cause added leaks or discomfort. We recommend our NorthShore liners which can be found here. If you're happy with the pad you're using measure the length and width to find a pad comparable to it.
Moderate Urinary and Bowel Incontinence
If you feel the most comfortable with pull-ons and have moderate incontinence then use our most popular pull-ons that can provide the most protection. The NorthShore™ FlexSupreme™ Pull-On Underwear only goes up to an 80-inch waist or hip. If you are anything larger than that number you'll have to transition into the briefs which are listed in the next section of the infographic.
Heavy Urinary and Bowel Incontinence
If you have skin folds in the lower abdominal area, then we recommend the Tranquility Hi-Rise Bariatric Brief. These briefs are designed to go over folds while offering a secure, comfortable fit. If you have bed sores or any other skin conditions in the thigh or groin area then you should consider the Tranquility breathable cloth-like brief as well as the Dignity Bariatric Brief. Both products offer a breathable material that will help combat moisture and promote healthy skin.
